How to clean blinds

Regular cleaning of your blinds is essential not just for keeping them looking their best but for extending their lifespan. Blinds that are thoroughly cleaned every few months are likely to stay in better condition for far longer. If you’re not sure how to clean blinds properly, read on. In this article, we’d detailed the best methods and products for cleaning Venetian, Roman and roller blinds.

Recommended cleaning methods for blinds

At Humberside Sunblinds, we often get asked how to clean blinds, specifically Venetian, Roman and roller blinds, which are three of the most popular styles on the market right now. By following these guidelines, you can help to keep your blinds in optimal condition for as long as possible.

Cleaning Venetian blinds can be slightly more time-consuming compared to some other types of blinds due to their design and structure. However, by using the right approach and tools, it’s possible to clean Venetian blinds effectively. Here are some methods you can use to clean Venetian blinds:

  • Lower the Venetian blinds and close the slats so no light can be seen coming from the window.
  • Hold the bottom rail of the blinds and dust the louvres using a microfibre cloth.
  • Reverse the slats so they face the other way round and then dust them on that side.
  • Reverse the slats again and wipe them down using a damp and soapy cloth.
  • Open the slats so the maximum amount of light is seen through them. The light will help the slats to dry.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds can be relatively easy to clean, depending on the specific fabric and construction of the blinds. Typically made of a thicker fabric than many other types of blinds, they shouldn’t be exposed to too much water during the cleaning process.

  • Vacuum your Venetian blinds. We recommend attaching a soft brush attachment to your vacuum cleaner and choosing the lowest suction setting.
  • Lightly remove the dust build-up by moving the brush attachment gently across the blinds. Fully lower the blinds to make sure all the dust is removed.
  • Alternatively, wipe them down with a damp, soapy cloth whilst taking care not to soak the blinds with too much water.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds offer a versatile window covering option, however, it’s essential to follow proper cleaning procedures based on the specific materials used. Prior to cleaning, always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and any relevant labelling. While most roller blinds can be submerged in water for a thorough clean, this isn’t always the case. Here are some key tips for cleaning roller blinds effectively:

  • Begin by detaching the blinds from the main bracket, and then carefully unroll them onto the floor for easy access.
  • Employ a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to eliminate surface dust and debris, gently moving it along the fabric.
  • To tackle general dirt and grime, dampen a cloth with mild soapy water and gently apply it to the fabric. While soaking the roller blinds isn’t usually necessary for minor stains, you may opt to do this if desired.
  • For white roller blinds, if needed, you can add a small amount of bleach to the damp cloth. Wear rubber gloves when using this cleaning method to ensure your safety.
  • Stubborn stains can be addressed by delicately scrubbing them with an old, clean toothbrush and a mixture of soapy water.
  • After cleaning, hang the blinds on a clothesline to air-dry them completely. Once they’re dry, reattach them to the main blinds bracket for normal operation.

More cleaning tips

By following these guidelines, you can maintain the cleanliness and appearance of your blinds, ensuring their optimal performance and longevity. Remember to choose the most suitable cleaning method based on the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer.

We recommend cleaning your blinds at least once every three to six months. This timescale allows for the removal of dust and dirt before it becomes too noticeable or hard to clean. Having said this, the frequency of cleaning your blinds will depend on various factors, including the level of use, the environment, and your own personal preference.
